What Is Dot and Dab

Dot and dab is a construction technique used in the installation of plasterboard or drywall onto walls. It involves attaching the plasterboard sheets to the wall by applying small dots or dabs of adhesive to the wall’s surface using a special gypsum adhesive.

How to plasterboard dot and dab

1. Preparation: The wall surface is cleaned and prepped to ensure it’s clean, dry, and free from any debris. This helps create a good bonding surface for the adhesive.
2. Adhesive Application: The adhesive mortar is applied to the wall in small dots or dabs. These dabs of adhesive are typically spaced across the wall surface. The spacing and size of the dabs depend on the specific adhesive used and the type of plasterboard being installed.
3. Plasterboard Placement: The plasterboard sheets are then pressed onto the dabs of adhesive, adhering them to the wall. The adhesive dabs are designed to hold the plasterboard securely in place.
4. Finishing: After the plasterboard is attached and secured, the boards can be finish by ether filling the joints and gaps between the boards with joint compound or by plastering with board finish.

1. Fixing: Once the plasterboard sheets are attached, they can be further secured by using screws or nails to fasten them to the wall studs or framing behind the plasterboard. This adds extra stability to the installation.

How to dot and dab plasterboard

Installing plasterboard, also known as drywall, is a fantastic way to enhance both the insulation and aesthetic appeal of your space.

Before you begin, ensure you have the necessary tools and materials.

Remove any existing fixtures or obstacles that might hinder the installation process. Cover the floor with protective sheets to prevent any mess.

Measure the dimensions of the wall and mark the plasterboard accordingly. Use a straight edge and utility knife to make precise cuts.

Use a notched trowel to evenly spread adhesive mortar onto wall, the aim is to insure complete coverage behind the board, to guarantee a strong bond with the wall.

Now position the plasterboard against the wall and press it into place to ensure a solid bond with the adhesive.

Can you dot and dab foil backed plasterboard?

Yes you can dot and dab foil backed plasterboards, the dot and dab method is exactly the same as for standard boards.

Can you dot and dab insulated plasterboard?

Yes you can dot and dab insulated plasterboards, again the process is the same as for foil backed and standard boards.

Can you dot and dab plasterboard to brick?

Yes you can dot and dab plasterboards straight onto brick, put the dabs on the wall and push the boards onto the adhesive dabs.

How much dot and dab do I need per m2?

You will need 4.5kg of dot and dab board adhesive per square metre of plasterboard. For a standard size board of 1200mm x 2400mm you will need half of a 25kg bag.

How thick should dot and dab be?

The recommended dot and dab thickness is 10mm once compressed between the board and the wall. The total thickness of the dabs and the plasterboard should be around 22.5mm with the board being 12.5mm and the dabs 10mm.

Is Dot and DAB the same as drywall?

Yes dot and dad is the same as drywall, it is the process of fixing plasterboards to a wall using dads of board adhesive.

What should the gap between dab and dot?

The gap between your dabs should be 450mm for 12.5mm plasterboards and 600mm for 15mm boards.
